Whatever Happened to Ethics?

I can’t tell my son that crime doesn’t pay but I have told him that God never blinks. I truly believe even our inner lives and private thoughts affect the outcome of many things around us. So how does this translate to business strategy, marketing and public relations?
Simply this: we only work with clients who also believe in an ethical framework. Rather than a “winner take all” mentality, it’s a philosophy that believes in “win/win.” My First Nations friends have taught me to understand that everything is interrelated (which is explained with much more complexity and way too much math in Systems Theory), and that we can take into considerations seven generations in the future in all that we do.
It’s an interesting time in which we live. Major corporations, including banks, have nearly bankrupted the worldwide economy by practicing government sanctioned greed that, were it perpetrated on a less grand scale, would be called fraud. Leaders of the “free world” have used lies and innuendoes to depose leaders, start wars, and take over foreign economies. Average people with average incomes are taught to believe that they can have everything they want by taking out their credit card – then indentured with impossible interest rates and almost no consumer protection.
What does all this have to do with marketing and communications? In former days when print was king, we could count on good editors and journalists to vet the facts and give us accurate news. At daily editorial meetings, the editors would weigh the stories and determine which ones had priority, which ones had local relevance, and which ones would take further investigation – which meant there was time and funding for in-depth investigation to get to a deeper story. And if they lied, they could be sued. Now, up to 80% of the news is generated by publicists, bloggers, and tweeters. Now, when everyone with a blog is a “citizen journalist,” accuracy takes a back seat to speed, so this is where ethics becomes a distinguishing difference.
Just remember, reputation is everything, even more so in the era of social media. A good guideline is transparency and truth lead to trustworthiness. Keep in mind that Google or other internet search engines remember everything. That means that just about everything you do online is traceable by someone who wants to follow the thread of who you are, what you’ve done, and where you trend.
